The Social Shopper: Break the Rules

They may be diminutive in size, but Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have always made a big impact on the world of style with their innate understanding—despite, perhaps, conventional wisdom—of not only what looks suit their frame, but also what pieces, no matter how at odds they are with each other, end up working together.

So, how do you buck convention? We say you conduct a little confident experimentation with the rules of fashion this weekend. Why not try this idea on for size: Play with volume, no matter what your shape, by putting items together that you had formerly been instructed to keep far, far apart. A strong example is found in this picture of Ashley found on
olsensanonymous.blogspot.com. By pairing loose knits with a full skirt and flats (a near scandal!) you can pull off a relaxed, cool, insouciant  look—despite the heat. And don’t worry about mixing and matching accessories: While, on paper, an exotic-skin handbag and a pair of everyday Birkenstocks may seem to be a strange pairing indeed, in real life the combination plays out perfectly. You never know until you try, right?

Here is our list for this week for your shopping (or just browsing) pleasure, and don’t forget to send your own ideas for Social Shopper via
Vogue’s Facebook and Twitter. If we like them, we will add them to our list next week.
